Tortoises make great pets and great props…JK!!! This is one very cooperative tortoise tho. Sulcatta tortoises often hide in their shells and LITERALLY NOTHING can get them out. I see this most commonly in psittacines (aka parrots). The 2 most common causes I see this condition associated with is beak malocclusion, meaning the top and bottom bills (rhinotheca and rhampotheca respectively) don’t appose properly, and underlying liver disease. It’s somewhat of a mystery as to why a liver problem can affect beak growth but in any of these cases I recommend bloodwork to look into the health of the liver and address dietary issues as inappropriate diets, especially high-seed diets, can lead to fatty-liver syndrome (aka hepatic lipidosis).
